Body Mass index (BMI)

... is a measure for assessing a person’s body weight. Since overweight is a growing global problem, the body mass index is used above all to point out the associated risk. However, the BMI gives only a rough guide value and it is disputed since it does not take into account a person’s build or the composition of the body weight in terms of fatty and muscle tissue, which vary by individual.

Bioelectric impedance analysis

Bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) is a measurement method used to determine a person’s fluid balance. To do this, a weak, safe alternating current is passed through the body and the resistance that the body shows to this current is measured. Since body fat contains less water than muscle mass, a statement may be made about the body mass distribution on the basis of the resistance measured.

In its technical implementation, this measurement procedure is far more complex than this simple explanation. OMRON supplies body composition monitors with hand electrodes, with foot electrodes and – the most accurate in their class – with both foot and hand electrodes. These body composition monitors with total body sensor technology give the most accurate measurement results regardless of the time of day and body water fluctuations. What is more, they are so accurate that they allow statements to be made about subcutaneous body fat and visceral fat.

8-point total body measurement
The premium models in the OMRON body composition monitors have a total of 8 measurement points distributed between hand and foot electrodes. 
These permit a reliable statement to be made on the body composition and – a medically important special feature – analysis and classification of the visceral body fat.

MDD conformity
Directive 93/42/EEC on medical products is an EC Directive and is known for short in Germany and Austria as the Medizinprodukterichtlinie (Medical Products Directive). 
The Directive is known internationally as the Medical Device Directive (MDD) .
It is the most important statutory instrument for the safety of medical products in the European region.

Measurements methods

1. Foot to foot method: Only the lower body is measured. The interpolation of the values for the entire body is derived from empirical data.

2. Hand to hand method: Only the upper body is measured. The interpolation of the values for the entire body is derived from empirical data.

3. Total body method: The entire body is measured. So OMRON has the most precise measurement method in bio impedance analysis and is therefore more accurate than all other BIA methods.

Body fat proportion
There is no generally applicable value that applies regardless of sex or age group. The medical recommendations and standard values depend on age, sex and build. Moreover, it is recommended from a medical point of view that a distinction is made between subcutaneous body fat and visceral body fat because increased visceral body fat has a much greater negative impact on health.
