calorie and Calorie - Confusion over this Simple Unit of Energy

A kilojoule is a unit of measure of energy, similar to the metric distance measure of kilometres. Food energy can also be measured in terms of the nutritional or large Calorie. One Calorie (Cal) has the same energy value as 4.186 kilojoules (kJ)

Some confusion exists, because scientific notation defines a gram calorie spelt with a small or lower case “c”. This is the unit used to measure the amount of energy required to heat water. There are 1,000 (small) calories in one (large) Calorie. Using metric scientific notation this is then known as 1 kilocalorie.

1kilocalorie = 1 Calorie = 1,000 (small) calories

The terms “calorie” and “Calorie” are often used interchangeably, which does make for a lot of confusion.

4.184 kilojoules = 4,184 joules = 1 Calorie = 1 kilocalorie = 1,000 calories
