Sport Science for Real

To be successful and achieve success in competitive sports it is essential to prepare technically and to training or the event physically, likewise to achieve succes at completing a physical challenge it is essential to plan meticulously, prepare and train to the optimum physical condition. The athlete community website www.FitnessDAILY.co.uk is focused on bring team of inidividuals together to enable more individuals to be successful at achieving their goals within sports competitions and physical challenges of endurance, speed, strength or a combination of all three.

fitnessASSIST is all about supporting and providing the tools for the sport scienctist to make their professional contribution to the athlete and the athlete's coach so that another part of the jigsaw of competitive sports success or challenge achievement can be completed and the eventual conclusion s one of success.

What is sport science? The team at fitnessASSIST are on a mission to popularise sport science, make it understandable and relevant to all athletes, and not just those with 2012 Olympic aspirations. It is our contention that the measurements, monitoring of cahnges both physilogical and psychologcal are as relevant to the inidividual using physical activity to rehab from illness, from the person focusd on running their first 5Km Charity Run as the Olympic hopefuls. Indeed it could be argued more so, becase they are engaging in physical activity because it is and will enhance their physical and mental well-being.

In essence Sport & Exercise Science is the study of physiology and psychology processes involved with performing physical tasks, often with a competitive or personal challenge aspect. The physical tasks can be designed for individuals to complete (i.e. running a marathon) or inidividuals performing as part of a team (i.e. football). The scientist to deliver sports & exercise science support services will engage in a variety of data gathering procedures, often using objective measuring procedures. Due to the complexity of collecting data from a "working" human from which ever aspect of sport science the scientist operates they inevitably have to ensure excellence in protocol design and measurement techniques to confirm the data they collect is measuring the very aspect they need to monitoring to quantify the change the athlete is looking for in the chosen physical performance.

The improvement in performance by an athlete is a close co-operation between athlete, coach and sport scienctist(s). Sports & Exercise Science is made of many disciplines from for example physiology, psychology, bio-mechanics it is therefore likely that the coach athlete will have to liase withvarious sports scienctists. The sport & exercise scientist's work may lead to the involvement of further professionals including with an applied aspect to their work for example physiotherapists or hypnotherapist. In-addition the work of the Sport Scienctist might point to the need to utilise other professinal service providers including specialists strength & conditioining coaches, bio-mechanicists (especially in running and cycling sports) or nutritionist. The professional team around an athlete can probably and should be quite extensive if the very best knowledge and its application is going to be used to achieve the very best results.

Typical range of profesisonal skills and knowledge an athlete and their coach could and should have access to: exercise physiologist, sports psychologist, bio-mechanicist, physotherapist, hypotherapist, strength & conditioning coach, nutritionist, sports equipment design technologist, and possibly to augment the coaches own sport specific knowldge additional skills coaches. The thing that amazes myself is that we expect a coach all to often to do all of this plus organise the logistics of training sessions, travelling, and planning etc etc. The job is an immense one, and should be recognised as such, www.fitnessDAILY.co.uk is their to provide the community suport and www.fitnessASSIST.co.uk is focused on providing the technical equipment and service support - a winning combination.
