Importance of good sports injury management
Arthritis Research UK has raised concerns about the lack of research into the prevention and management of osteoarthritis as a result of sports injury.
A new report reveals that 56% of active individuals have sustained an injury such as a fracture, broken bone or ligament sprain and 78% are concerned about the long term consequence of injuries. The study also reveals that 32% worry about limited mobility or joint problems in later life.
The charities medical director, Professor Alan Silman, said that the limited research carried out showed that some sport-related injuries will cause osteoarthritis.
“While there is reasonable guidance on how to manage injuries in the short-term, there is no research into the long term implications of sports injuries and osteoarthritis, and what we can do to better prevent and manage OA,” he said.
“We need to find effective approaches to prevent injuries and, when they occur, improve management to reduce the risk of long term consequences.”
fitnessASSIST provide a range of quality, fast and effective sports injury treatment products, to help prevent injuries occurring and aid the recovery process.
Injuries are an unfortunate occurrence in sports participation and immediate management and treatment is vital for minimising swelling and inflammatory response as well as reducing the possibility of developing more serious conditions in later life.
