How to interpret blood cholesterol screening results

Blood cholesterol screening allows you to check cardiovascular health and other risk factors quickly and accurately.

Our range of blood chemistry testing products enable effective cholesterol screening to be carried out in the gym, health club, home or workplace.

This brief guide provides a basic understanding of what your results mean and what action you may wish to take.

Less than 5.0 mmol/l

Generally this is considered the desirable level. Your risk of heart disease is low provided other risk factors* are also good. However, as cholesterol levels are likely to increase with age it is worth keeping in mind that everyone can benefit from an active lifestyle and healthy diet.

Over 5.00 mmol/l

Your healthcare professional will advise you on your level of risk and appropriate measures to take.

NB: Guidelines for cholesterol screening are constantly under review and subject to change, therefore we recommend healthcare professionals should refer to the joint British Society Guidelines or other national and local guidelines for coronary heart disease risk. Guidelines for Community Pharmacists are available from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

*Other known risk factors for heart disease include smoking, high blood pressure, family history, diabetes, obesity, inactivity, excessive alcohol and stress.

Please note that a single diagnostic test never gives a completely certain result, even with good equipment and in professional hands. High results should be checked by your GP.

If you have any queries about the test, the result, or the advice you have been given, consult the person who carried out the test or your GP.
