fitnessASSIST aid marathon runners training

More than 70 marathon runners took part in an informative seminar presented by fitnessASSIST CEO Steve Raven and elite distance athlete Andi Jones at Chester Racecourse on Monday, 2 May.

The delegates are all currently training for this year’s MBNA Chester Marathon and The Runners Workshop was designed to help them understand how they can run a faster time and provide an insight into the mind of a world-class distance runner.

Primarily focusing on helping experienced runners perform to the best of their ability, the free workshop highlighted some key messages to help athletes run a fast marathon.

While Andi, a top ten finisher at the 2010 Virgin London Marathon, offered a real life marathon runner’s perspective, sports scientist Steve was able to provide valuable, science-based advice.

The key topics covered during the seminar were:
  • The importance of the aerobic engine; develop aerobic endurance by completing long, steady miles during the winter months.
  • Training background; focusing on local muscular endurance and develop race pace speed during the spring and summer will help you race well in October.
  • Load detriment; body fat can be a big handicap so race light. A kilogram of body fat can add 20 minutes onto your race completion time.
  • Motivation and combating fatigue; setting personal goals and adopting a competitive mindset can help you in the second half of a marathon as determination is required to achieve goals.
  • Hydration and electrolytes; sodium and fluid are key components for the bodies muscular system to work properly for the whole distance. A poor hydration strategy can cost 30 minutes in race completion time.
  • In-race refuelling; understanding energy sources and how getting 60g of glycogen into the bodies muscular system will ensure a successful second half of the marathon.
The overriding message of the day was that, like anything, marathon running and training is a balancing act but that consistent training will allow athletes to reap the rewards.

All of the delegates found the workshop extremely useful and will aim to put it their newly found knowledge into practice by modifying their training programmes accordingly.
