Utilising the same testing procedures and protocols as national governing bodies, the fitnessASSIST sports science lab was officially opened by Olympic gold medal winner Darren Campbell MBE on Wednesday, June 30.

Sports science testing is an invaluable tool in ensuring athletes are able to reach their peak but up until now it has been beyond the reach and financial means of most. The fitnessASSIST sports science lab will break down these barriers.

After a hugely successful career in international athletics, Darren Campbell knows what it takes to win and has a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of physiological testing for athletes.

Since retiring from competitive action in 2006, Darren has progressed into coaching where his passion for sports science has grown stronger.

This passion led to Darren developing the Pro Athlete Supplementation range of high performance sports nutrition products, which is now endorsed by a host of leading athletes and clubs.

Offering both in-house and mobile testing solutions, the fitnessASSIST laboratory has been approved by RISES – the Research Institute of Sports and Exercise Science – and provides athletes and coaches with the insight they need to address specific areas of their routine in order to maximise their training and achieve optimum performance.

A typical testing session at the fitnessASSIST sports science lab can include body composition analysis, calculation of VO2 max, assessment of lactate threshold, peak anaerobic power, heart rate zones and running economy in addition to tests of strength, power, flexibility and agility.

Sport specific testing packages are available for endurance athletes, cyclists and triathletes while coaches and athletes who require a bespoke testing programme are able to tailor a package to meet their exact demands.

The portable nature of our lab also allows fitnessASSIST to take professional sports science testing to clubs and groups, allowing for multi-athlete testing which is ideally suited to team sports such as football, rugby, basketball and hockey.

Interestingly, it is not only athletes and coaches who can benefit from the fitnessASSIST laboratory as physiological testing is an important tool in evaluating overall health and wellbeing.
